Seed Library

Welcome to our Seed Library

The purpose of the Seed Library is to establish an ever growing and curated depository of fruit, vegetable, flower and herb seeds at no cost to the local community and to provide accessible means for all to sustainable gardening.

What is a seed library?

  • A Seed Library is a free community resource that provides seeds to local residents, encouraging gardening, sustainability, and shared learning. We believe that this helps the community obtain plants to grow and beautify their homes, and in turn, our community. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener, our Seed Library is here with an abundance of flowers, vegetables, and herbs to help you get growing!

  • Our Seed Library is designed to promote:

    • Gardening for all skill levels

    • Food security and access to fresh produce

    • Local plant biodiversity

    • Environmental awareness

    • Educational and hands-on learning opportunities

How can I borrow seeds?

  • Just visit our library and ask staff at the main circulation desk about our seed library. You can browse which seeds are available on our regularly updated inventory list at the library, and request specific seed varieties. Each household is limited to checking out up to five seed varieties per week.

  • After you’ve requested your seeds, please feel free to share what you have grown on Instagram or Facebook, with the #leoniaseedlibrary. We can’t wait to see what you’ve grown!

Due to limited quantities, each person is limited to five seed varieties per visit.

These seeds may not be re-sold.

The Seed Library accepts donations of fruit, vegetable, herb and flower seeds from commercial companies, seed banks and other local partner organizations with a shared interest in seed collection. Donated seeds are packaged commercially and not listed as invasive species or noxious weeds by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. At this time we are not accepting seed donations from individuals.
